eskrima sticks

Where is a good place or web sight to get Eskrima sticks from? I have tried several sights some with great sucess and some not so good. Also is there a web sight i can go to to learn to grow rattan and get starter palnts or seeds? I know being  from Wisconsin the weather probably won't let me but nothing ventured nothing gained.

sticks

I got a pair from FMA pulse.  now Mr. Ferrin said to sand them and bake then in the oven then put on a coat or 3 of tounge oil. i just cannot remember bake for how long and what temp? does anyone know? thanks.

Stick baking

According to "Stickman:"

"...I bake the sticks in an oven at about 375 degrees for 10-15 minutes. It is important to monitor the sticks constantly, so they don't over-bake. During this process, steam will come out of the end of the stick... As soon as the steam stops, the stick is done! Sometimes one end will finish before the other; let the dry end stick out of the oven. I like to pull the sticks out and tap the ends on tile. A wet sound means "not finished". As soon as it has a crisp click, it's ready. By constant monitoring, the sticks get moved and turned, so they don't overbake on one side or one end."

It is important to remember that not all ovens are created equal so, if you wish, you can use a good thermometer to check the actual temperature of the oven in comparison to the displayed temperature.  In general it really should not matter if there are a few degrees of temperature variation as long as you monitor the sticks and make sure they do not burn.

Also, if you want a bit of flair, you can add a burn pattern to the sticks before you bake them.  It is all a matter of taste.

 thanks. ;)

 thanks. ;)

Any time

My pleasure.  Have fun with it.  I have been enjoying tinkering with the sticks.  Even though they can be thought of as just training tools it is nice to have a bit of a connection to them as opposed to just pulling them out of a box and swinging them at people.

thanks.

thanks.

I got your sticks

New Horizon,

I usually sell sticks, although when I come to your neck of the woods, I usually only do so by preorder, as bringing them on the plane incur extra baggage fees. Most sticks sold on the internet are not worth it, I would look for a supplier that only deals in FMA products to ensure a better quality stick, however that is not a guarantee.

Wikipedia has an entry on Rattan (here)

eHow has a how-to-grow Rattan Article (here)

I would recommend purchasing the rattan, as it seems to have a long growth cycle and requires allot of care to grow. For your effort and buck, purchasing sticks might be your best bet. I only charge $10 for ea. 28" stick for midgrade rattan. You should also consider soaking the rattan you have: there is a blogpost regarding this on the ITO site here.
It appears the tropical climate and high rain fall is necessary for good growth, but then you might wish to do further research.
